What is Pre - Mediation (Pre - FDR)

Pre‑Mediation (Pre‑FDR) Support

Bridges Australia offers a dedicated Pre‑Mediation (Pre‑FDR) service designed to help clients feel prepared, confident, and emotionally regulated before entering the formal Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) process. This early‑intervention support gives families the space to slow down, understand what’s ahead, and build the clarity and skills needed to participate in mediation in a constructive, child‑focused way.

Our Pre‑Mediation sessions provide a calm, supportive environment where clients can:

  • Understand the mediation process — what to expect, what their role is, and how negotiation works.
  • Clarify their goals — what they hope to achieve, what matters most for their children, and what outcomes feel realistic.
  • Reduce conflict and emotional overwhelm — through emotional regulation strategies, communication coaching, and grounding techniques.
  • Explore options and prepare proposals — so they enter FDR with a clearer sense of direction and readiness.
  • Build confidence — especially for clients who feel anxious, unsure, or overwhelmed by the idea of mediation.

Why Pre‑Mediation Matters

Clients who engage in Pre‑Mediation are typically better prepared, more focused, and less reactive during the FDR process. This preparation increases the likelihood of:

  • more productive conversations
  • reduced conflict during sessions
  • clearer communication
  • a stronger understanding of their negotiation role
  • higher chances of reaching agreement and positive outcomes

A Supportive Client Journey

Many families face long waiting lists before accessing FDR. Bridges Australia offers a meaningful pathway during this waiting period:

  1. Client joins the FDR waitlist
  2. Referral to Bridges Australia for Pre‑Mediation
  3. Pre‑Mediation sessions focusing on emotional readiness, clarity, and practical preparation
  4. Client becomes “FDR‑ready” — clearer, calmer, and more confident
  5. Client returns to FDR service better equipped to participate
  6. Higher likelihood of agreement and positive outcomes

Our Approach

All Pre‑Mediation support is delivered through a trauma‑informed, culturally safe, and child‑focused lens, drawing on 27 years of counselling, mediation, and family support experience across Australia and Brazil. Sessions are available in person on the Sunshine Coast or online Australia‑wide and Brazil.
